Guns N' Roses' Costa Rican Concert Cancelled
Friday • April 9, 2010

Tonight's (Friday, April 9) Guns N' Roses concert at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jose, Costa Rica has reportedly been cancelled. According to local media reports, the show was called off because part of the stage collapsed from the weight of the screen which the band has been using as part of its live performances.

Outside the stadium, fans of Guns N' Roses have been lining up to obtain refunds for tickets which cost between ¢ 16,000 (approximately $29) and ¢ 63,000 ($113).

A four-minute video report on the Guns N' Roses concert cancellation from the Costa Rican news channel NR6 can be viewed below.

As previously reported, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose is being sued by his former manager for nearly $2 million dollars in unpaid commissions, according to the Associated Press. Front Line Management, led by music industry powerhouse Irving Azoff, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on March 25, claiming that Rose owes the company $1.9 million, or 15 percent of the more than $12 million that Rose has earned from performances in Europe, Canada and South America, based on an oral agreement.

Azoff, considered one of the most powerful men in music, has managed the careers of artists such as the Eeagles and Van Halen, and at one point handled the affairs of Rose's former Guns bandmates in Velvet Revolver.

He is widely credited with pushing Rose to finally complete and release the 2008 GUNS album "Chinese Democracy" after a 15-year delay.

Rose parted ways with Azoff at some point in the last year and claims he is now handled by Doc McGhee, a veteran rock manager whose clients over the years have included KISS, Bon Jovi and MötleyY Crüe. However, KISS frontman Paul Stanley recently told Classic Rock magazine that McGhee is in fact not managing Rose nor Guns N' Roses.

The eccentric singer has not yet commented publicly on the lawsuit.

Axl Expects To Be Back In Costa Rica Soon
Saturday • April 10, 2010

Axl Rose, the lead singer for Guns N' Roses, said today by way of Twitter that he hopes to be back in Costa Rica as soon as possible to make up for the cancelled concert on Friday.

The musician's comments are contrary to the assurance that the Costa Rican promoter, 28 Producciones, on Friday night that the cancelled show would take place in Alajuela on Tuesday.

"We are exploring one or two locations in San José to be back as soon as possible", said Rose.

The musician also noted that he is grateful the collapse of the stage didn't occur during the concert.

"While obviously we would have rather given a good show, we are grateful that the serious and dangerous problems with the stage occurred before the show and no one was hurt", said Rose.

The tweet:

"No word on if there'll b a makeup 4 Costa Rica. Though we'd obviously rather have a had a fun show we're more than thankful the very real n' serious staging problems were discovered b4 hand n' no one was hurt. We're lookin' at gettin' bk 2 a place or 2 in SA asap. Hope everyone enjoyed the shows. Big thanks 2 everyone who came out n' supported us!! "

Bumblefoot FB/Twitter:

I emailed management to see if there was any possibility of doing an outdoor acoustic show tonight, but don't think it'll be possible, a lot of logistics that come into play - security issues, any conflicts with existing performance contracts, finding a location, getting local gear last moment, government approval...

Between Ecuador & Panama we had a 5-day break and were able to get a cargo plane to Rio and back for the make-up show - we have no breaks from here til the end of the tour and don't know if it'll be possible to reschedule the show after the tour ends - the gear is supposed to go straight to Europe from Puerto Rico. I ...wish there was something I could do, feel fkn helpless.

I think tonight we're all at a loss I'm as sad as everyone, I came here to play a show for you tonight. (I'm at the hotel, never even got to go to the venue...)

Fact update: Wasn't 'city inspectors that didn't allow it. City officials would not give the permits needed to try to do the show tomorrow.

After the show didn't happen in Costa Rica on the 9th, I took GNR fans in the hotel with me to a remote spot outside and gave them a good 2-hour-ish personal acoustic show, with their wonderful help on vocals, acoustic bass, and a guitar for me to use. Had to make music that night, I wish it could have been as it should ha...ve been, but at least tried to bring smiles to the group that was there, as they did for me

Del James FB:

the 4/9 show in Costa Rica has been cancelled due to an unsafe stage. The stage, which was built by a local crew here in Costa Rica, began to bend & bow as we placed gear on it and was deemed too dangerous.
