(GunsNRoses.com) The wait is over. The new album from Guns N' Roses, Chinese Democracy, has arrived. The disc, which features 14 brand new songs from Axl and company, has garnered rave reviews and is easily the most anticipated release of the year.

"Chinese Democracy" opens things up on a theatrical note. Right away you realize that frontman and GN'R mastermind Axl Rose has never sounded better. Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal's guitar solo is another highlight of the title track. "Better" couldn't be better, with a five-pronged guitar attack setting off explosions while a hard beat crunches away. Tommy Stinson's bass line provides the backbone of the rhythm. "Street Of Dreams" comes next, the beautiful song that you might recognize during GN'R's 2006 tour, introduced as "The Blues."

The fifth track, "If The World," is a classic funk-rock song with Middle Eastern elements and liquid bass playing from synth man and programmer –- and track co-writer –- Chris Pitman. "There Was A Time" "Broken glass and cigarettes, writing on the wall/It was a bargain for the summer and I thought I had it all," Axl sings before this instant classic crescendos into the powerful chorus. Other highlights include Dizzy Reed, Pitman and Axl's synth orchestra, which gives the song a movie feel.

A gorgeous instrumental intro featuring piano, bass and Axl's signature wails begins the album's next track, "Catcher In The Rye". Two tasty guitar solos here –- one by Bumblefoot, one by Buckethead. "Scraped" features Axl all over the register, with layers and layers of vocal tracks piledt on top of each other while a sinister guitar riff shoots through the chorus: "Don't you try to stop us now/'cause I just won't let you." Meanwhile, "Sorry" is a kick-back track with acoustic guitar but with Axl-penned lyrics that bite: "You don't know why I won't give in," he says. "To hell with the pressure, I'm not caving in."

Track No. 10, "Riad N' The Bedouins" has Axl giving his all to the vocal over a complex, multi-layered guitar rhythm. The instrumental bridge segues from strings to a Bumblefoot solo assault. An electronic drum loop leads right into the next song, "I.R.S.", which contains some of Axl's most inner-reaching lyrical content on the album. Track No. 12, "Madagascar," features accltaimed orchestral arranger Paul Buckmaster and emotional samples from history, including two speeches by Martin Luther King Jr., the films "Mississippi Burning" and "Cool Hand Luke."

"This I Love" starts with only Axl's voice and piano playing, and it's the only song on the album solely written by Axl. "Prostitute" brings things to a close, with Axl saying, "It's not a question of whether my heart is true."

Chinese Democracy is a truly epic project, GNR's first studio release since 1993's The Spaghetti Incident?.

Retail chain Best Buy is the exclusive outlet for the CD and vinyl album in the United States. The album is also available via the iTunes Store.

Associated Press writer Christopher Bodeen reports that a newspaper published by China's ruling Communist Party is blasting the latest Guns N' Roses album as an attack on the Chinese nation.

Delayed since recording began in 1994, "Chinese Democracy" hit stores in the U.S. on Sunday, although it is unlikely to be sold legally in China, where censors maintain tight control over films, music and publications.

In an article Monday headlined "American band releases album venomously attacking China," the Global Times said unidentified Chinese Internet users had described the album as part of a plot by some in the West to "grasp and control the world using democracy as a pawn."

The album "turns its spear point on China," the article said.

China's Foreign Ministry did not respond to faxed questions about the article, although a spokesman speaking on routine condition of anonymity said: "We don't need to comment on that."

Spokesmen for the Culture Ministry and State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, government bodies that regulate album releases and performances, could not be reached for comment.

The Global Times article referred only to the title of the album and not to specific song lyrics. The record's title track makes a reference to the Falun Gong meditation movement that was banned by China as an "evil cult" and warns "if your Great Wall rocks blame yourself," in an apparent message to the country's authoritarian government.

Songs from the album could be heard on Internet sites such as YouTube and the band's MySpace page on Monday and it was not immediately possible to tell whether China's Internet monitors were seeking to block access to it.

Monitors use content filters that highlight and sometimes block messages containing words such as democracy. That prompted some Internet users to combine English and Chinese characters in their postings about the album to skirt such monitoring.

China approves only limited numbers of foreign films and recordings for distribution each year, partly due to political concerns but also to protect domestic producers.

Live performances are also closely regulated, with bands forced to submit set lists beforehand. The Rolling Stones were asked not to play several songs with suggestive lyrics during their 2006 China debut, including "Brown Sugar," "Honky Tonk Woman," "Beast of Burden" and "Let's Spend the Night Together."

Earlier this year, bandleader Harry Connick Jr. was forced to make last-minute changes to his show in Shanghai because an old song list was mistakenly submitted to Chinese authorities to secure the performance permit for the concert. Authorities insisted he play the songs on the original list, even though his band did not have the music for them.

That came just a week after Icelandic singer Bjork embarrassed authorities by shouting "Tibet!" at the end of a Shanghai concert, prompting stricter vetting of foreign performers.

Despite such restrictions, computer file sharing and pirating of DVDs, computer games and music CDs is rampant in China, meaning that much banned material is available through alternative channels.

Guns N Roses fans rushed to get their hands on advance copies of the long-awaited new album 'Chinese Democracy' last night (November 23).

Up to 100 cycle couriers hit the streets of London to deliver 15 copies of the band's first record in 15 years to selected music retailers who had been given permission to let fans buy the album a day early.

Scott Mitchell, 37, from Heathrow, London, was the first person in the country to own 'Chinese Democracy', which is officially released today(November 24).

Mitchell, who was 22 when their previous album 'The Spaghetti Incident?' was released, said: "It is crazy to think that it's been 15 years to the day since the last record was released.

"I've been hoping this one would actually see the light of day. It's great to be the first to finally own what we thought we'd never see.

"I've got all the previous albums and what I've heard so far is brilliant and sounds like it's going set the standard for the rock releases of the future."

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said extra copies of the album have been drafted in to cope with high demand at the retailer's flagship store on Oxford Street in central London.

"The anticipation and excitement around the release of 'Chinese Democracy' has been building for quite some time now - we've had more enquiries about this over the past couple of years than for any other album, and now it's finally here we expect it to fly off the shelves," he added.

He continued: "Our stores have ordered extra copies to cope with the likely demand, and a number of them will be opening early on Monday morning."

According to HITS Magazine's web site HITS Daily Double, the unprecedented Sunday release of Guns N’ Roses’ Geffen album Chinese Democracy as a Best Buy exclusive is causing havoc on the sales charts, making the guesstimate process even more of a crapshoot than usual. After yesterday’s first-day sales, which include a reported 25k downloads at iTunes, first-week sales prognostications are ranging anywhere from 300-500k.

We’ll keep you posted as the week goes on, as this number is bound to fluctuate. Thanks to a recent controversial SoundScan ruling about counting digital sales, Chinese Democracy will not debut on tomorrow’s chart, but the following Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Speaking of Guns N’ Roses, the band’s free MySpace streaming premiere of Chinese Democracy has attracted 8,429,387 plays in its first four days on the site, more than half a million ahead of the previous record-holder, Beyonce, after being up half the time.
